Q: What is Catholic Servant Leadership?
A: Catholic Servant Leadership is a new approach to leadership that draws from the social justice teachings of the Roman Catholic Church; modern insights from Leadership Science, including Emotional Intelligence; Servant Leadership perspectives; and insights from the revolutionary non-violent martial art of Aikido.
Q: Does Catholic Servant Leadership have a focus?
A: Using principles from the Catholic Church, the focus of Catholic Servant Leadership is on using leadership to serve others in order to create a more peaceful and compassionate world.
Q: How do Catholic Servant Leaders focus on using leadership to serve others?
A: Catholic Servant Leaders strive to embody leadership with love and compassion for the sake of others, themselves and the world.
Jesus tells us: "A new command I give to you: 'Love one another.' As I have loved you, so too must you love one another." (John 13:34)
Q: What do you mean by "embody leadership"?
A: One can embody leadership when one leads others relationally with a unified mind, body and spirit. Embodied leadership is leadership that comes from our bones ... from our gut ... as much as from our intellect. It is the difference between actually eating a dinner as opposed to flipping through pages of a cookbook. Embodied leadership feeds your soul ... and the souls of those around you.
Embodied leadership is what St. Francis was talking about when he said, "Preach the gospel at all time. Use words when necessary."

A: Yes, he is. Tim has been training regularly in the non-violent Japanese martial art of Aikido ('the Art of Peace') since 1989 and holds black belt ranking. He currently trains (and teaches) at the Cleveland Aikikai in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Prior to starting Aikido, Tim trained in T’ai Chi Ch’uan.
Q: What can a martial art like Aikido teach us about creating peace?
A: Far more than you'd think. Aikido ('the Art of Peace') teaches people to go beyond our hard-wired reactions to conflict and violence ... and to seek the loving resolution of conflict and violence.
The ethical stance of Aikido fits very closely with the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church. A form of embodied Emotional Intelligence, Aikido teaches Catholic Servant Leaders how to use the wisdom of our body in order to leader with peace, love and harmony.
St. Paul tells us: "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1 Cor. 6:19-20)
Q: Where can I learn more about Aikido?
A: Visit here.
Q: Do people have to practice Aikido to benefit from Tim's presentations?
A: Not at all! Tim has been brining the principles of Aikido "off the mat" for over a decade. Tim has given presentations to groups ranging from incarcerated juvenile delinquents to parents to healthcare professionals to corporate leaders of international companies. Tim's straight-forward style takes intellectual concepts and makes the concrete and accessible to everyone.
Q: I'm from an all woman Catholic college. How will bringing in a man who practices martial arts help our young women to grow as leaders?
A: Great question! Tim teaches an experiential, values-centered, relationship-based approach to leadership that is deeply rooted in the tradition of Roman Catholic social justice teachings ... an approach that is very accesible to women leaders.
Most importantly, by drawing from the principles of the non-violent martial art of Aikido, Tim can teach your young women how to put faith into action in ways that few leadership experts can.

Q: Our university has an Aikido club. Can Tim teach an Aikido class while he is here giving a Keynote Speech?
A: Tim would be honored to teach Aikido at any university or college Aikido club. Just as the Catholic Church has certain protocol, however, so too do the martial arts. In traditional Japanese martial arts the decision as to who teaches lies with the head instructor of the Aikido dojo (school).
If your Aikido instructor is open to having Tim guest instruct, Tim would be delighted to discuss the possibility of doing so with the head instructor of your college or university's Aikido Club.
Best of all, when done in conjunction with a Keynote Speech, Tim never charges for being a guest instructor at a college Aikido dojo (school).
